Ms. Brown graduated from Brown University in 1987, with an A.B. degree in International Relations. She graduated from the University of San Diego, School of Law and was admitted to the Bar in 1990. Ms. Brown is a certified specialist in family law and a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. She is also a member of the Collaborative Family Law Group of San Diego. She served as President of the San Diego County Bar Foundation, Vice-president and Member of the Board of Directors of the San Diego County Bar Association, Vice-president and Member of the Board of Directors of Lawyers Club of San Diego and as a Member of the Board Governors of California Women Lawyers. She has been a speaker at: The 16th Annual Trial Advocacy Institute of American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers; Certified Family Law Specialists of the San Diego County Bar Association seminars on ethics and case and statute updates; and on Family Law Practice at the “Stepping Up to the Bar” program of the San Diego County Bar Association. Ms. Brown was the inaugural recipient of the Michael C. Shea award given by the San Diego County Bar Association Certified Family Law Specialists.

Death During Divorce: The Phantom Menace?
The national divorce rate is 50%. In California it is 60%. It is likely that half of your estate planning clients will go through a marital dissolution. What happens when “’til death do us part” falls in the midst of that proceeding? Meredith Brown will speak about legal fictions that exist only in family law proceedings and steps that can be taken to preserve them in the event of a litigant’s death. She will also discuss the procedure for making changes to estate planning, severing the automatic right of survivorship in jointly titled property, and the unintended consequences of doing so.
