His role is focused on promoting entrepreneurship and interdisciplinary research, building collaborations in the San Diego region, sharing research and education accomplishments with our community and funreaising to support these efforts. prior to this position, he was Dean of the College of Sciences at SDSU for 11 years. \n \nStanley obtained a PhD in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from the UC Irvine, did a postdoctoral fellowship in Genetics at the University of Utah, then moved to a faculty position at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign where we has a professor of Microbiology for 18 years. Before moving to SDSU, he served as Director of the Illinois Biotechnoloy Center.\n \nStanley served as President of the American Society for Microbiology, one of the largest international scientific societies. He has served as an advisor for U.S. and international agencies on research, biosafety, biodefense, health, and graduate education. He has testified before the U.S. House Appropriations Committee.\n \nResearch in Stanley’s lab focuses on how new infectious diseases arise, and the development of new vaccines and antimicrobials. He is the author of over 100 scientific publications and 10 books. He has developed widely used educational websites, and hosted popular scientific podcasts and videos. He has organized courses and conferences around the world. He has received several teaching awards, Honorary Professorships, an Honorary PhD, and is an elected Fellow of the American Academy for Microbiology.\n \nIn addition to academia, Stanley has been closely involved in business. Together with his brother, he started his first company as an undergraduate. Since then he has consulted with large agricultural and pharmaceutical companies and small biotech companies. He has been involved in founding five companies. \n \n \n \nTopic: \n \nSDUS's Shared History and Shared Future: Mission Valley Update\n \nFor over 120 years, San Diego State University (SDSU) has played a vital role in the region’s higher education system. With 35,000 students enrolled during the 2016/2017 academic year and 60 percent of our more than 400,000 alumni residing in the area, the social and economic impact of SDSU on the San Diego region is significant.
