Topic:

We are pleased to present the topic of “The Family Conversation” at our January 2018 meeting. The panelists will address the goals of legacy planning, discuss family dynamics and intergenerational communication, and provide steps as to how we as professionals can further incorporate this concept as part of our practice. By exploring and implementing this concept with clients, some of the potential positives you can experience are better overall client relationships as the clients see the value and dimension you can add, as well as a better quality of communication and more detailed information regarding the clients' objectives and goals. Client retention naturally increases as you incorporate additional family members, collaborate with their team of professionals, and implement your clients' values and goals. The panelists will be presenting the “why’s” of The Family Conversation, and will follow up with a set of “how‐to’s” and some practical take‐away’s that will provide a new skill set or enhance what you are already doing as you work with clients and further differentiate yourself while providing the best end result overall for your client.

Panel Speaker Kevin L. Day:

Kevin L. Day grew up locally , his law firm; Day & Associates, works in the areas of estate planning, trust administration and entity formation, but most notably  Kevin is recognized as one of the leading international asset protection planning attorneys in the United States.  In addition to his Juris Doctorate, Mr. Day holds a Bachelor Degree in Chinese Studies and an MBA in International Management.  Mr. Day has authored numerous books on the subjects of lawsuit protection, offshore strategies, asset protection and privacy planning.  His extensive expertise in the field of lawsuit protection makes him a frequent guest speaker at conferences throughout the country speaking on the benefits and pitfalls of using domestic & international asset protection planning.  Since entering the international asset protection practice arena in 1992, Mr. Day has been engaged not only by noted actors, athletes, and many high net worth individuals, but also by many small-business entrepreneurs and individuals who need lawsuit protection and privacy on a smaller budget.  Mr. Day has the unique and valuable ability to ascertain the particular needs of each client and to customize client’s estate plan to meet those peculiar privacy, business or pre-marriage planning needs.

Although lawsuit protection planning is very niche, it is still fundamentally estate planning and must inculcate all of those crucial depository issues of addressing family concerns and family transition objectives. Mr. Day has found that special attention must be used to highlight the need for family transitions of estate plans that are aimed at privacy planning. Open communications between the generations early on will avoid confusion, unnecessary dissipation of wealth and enhanced family dysfunction, which post-death disarray seems to exacerbate.
